Valentine’s Day is the one day every year that people all over the world comes together in the spirit of love. It is the holiday of love, were people bestow flowers, candy, and many more things that show affection they have for their loved one.
The history of Valentine consists of many legends. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome, while Emperor Claudius II made a law against men to marry. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the circumstance, held secret marriage ceremonies. Claudius found out about it and ordered Valentine put to death.
According to another legend, Valentine sent the first “valentine” himself from prison. While in the penitentiary, he was claimed to have fallen in love with his jailor’s daughter. It is alleged that he sent the young woman a letter, which he signed, “From you Valentine.” These stories certainly do emphasize his submission of heroic, sympathetic, and most importantly, a romantic figure.
Today Valentine is one of the most profitable holiday for business owners. Retail sales go through the roof for cards, flowers, candy and restaurants, as well as jewelry and perfume.
It is a day to celebrate not only romantic love, but also recognizes important people in our lives. There is nothing better than to simply say “I love you,” regardless of the relationship, than sending a Valentine.
“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” (Unknown)
